Ruth Murray: Decorative Design

Airflake by Abstracta

Airflake,
 Stefan Borselius
This attractive screen has a valuable purpose since it is sound absorbing, made from moulded fibre felt. It can be fixed onto walls and ceilings or used as a room divider, making it a useful aesthetic to quieten an area during group meetings and tutorials while other students are working around.  The screen is built from hexagon shapes which come in a variety of designs and colours and can be freely combined to personalise the outcome.

Crocheted Glass, Manchester Art Gallery

A traditional textile craft is re-interpreted in an unconventional medium: Catherine combines glass fibre strands, made from recycled glass, to make a flexible yarn. These are then crocheted into a doily pattern using old designs inherited from her grandmother, and fired in a kiln to fuse the fibre. I love how elements from the past have been brought into modern day design, as in my own work old books and patterns have been used to create contemporary interiors.

  1. These patterns really remind me of your work, they look effective with the glass background... perhaps you could photograph your work in front of a window.
