Ruth Murray: Carole Waller, Textile Paintings

"Beach"
Carole Waller is a visual artist who works with colour, light, textiles, glass, dyes and paint, all of which relate to my current project ideas. Her pieces become impressive glass installations and textile hangings, which are examples of how my mono-printing could be applied to an architectural context. I love the vibrant colour palettes and varied use of textured and fluid marks which conveys energy and enthusiasm.

The paintings are on unstretched cloth and often hang away from the wall. Waller has used transparent fabrics to layer different images, which resemble projections since they allow light to shine through and seem to float in front of your eyes on the gently flowing material.

"Presence Absence"

Other fabric paintings have been laminated between two layers of toughened glass 10mm thick. This creates a strong sturdy structure yet still retains the textile aesthetic. Curved glass feels less rigid and more approachable.

"Beach (Double Curve)"

I like how the shapes mimic each other in this piece which would be effective on a larger scale, enabling you to walk between walls illuminated with light and colour.
