Ruth Murray: Book Sculptures

I investgated artists who used books to create three-dimensional structures which would look impressive in an interior space.

Yvette Hawkins

I love how this piece is not confined to a specific area but spreads across the walls and floor. Zoe could create structures which seem to grow around the room like a magical, overgrown garden.

Tubular structures have been repeated and stacked to form an entire wall.

Kristiina Lahde
Lots of small structures are featured within the large one. The column would be an impressive, towering feature in the new building with the open-planned spaces and high ceilings, especially if the repeating units contained coloured lights.

These books appear delicate and graceful as they are suspended with thin pages open displaying an array of light.

Cara Barer
Barer’s work is influential since they are sculptural pieces yet the photographic documentation is significant in creating a distinctive and striking appearance. It shows the physical evolution of an object since books are soaked in water and manipulated into a new form, which resembles an organic form. A black background feels atmospheric and draws attention to the pages unique curving lines and tinted colour.
