Ruth Murray: Impressive Architecture

Outside Facade,
"Institut du Monde Arabe", Paris,
 Built 1981-198
Initially the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris appears to be a rectangular building with an uncompromising glass-covered steel wall. However the metallic screen features moving geometric motifs which automatically open and close to control the amount of light and heat entering from the sun. These photo-sensitive, motor-controlled shutters create an interior space filtered with light which casts Islamic patterns over the floors and walls. It is interesting how this decorative projection is only a momentary occurrence and changes depending on environmental conditions. Likewise, I could create wall dividers for an open-planned area, consisting of alternating layers that regulate visibly and light between the space.
